No worries, I didn't take offense :)

Proper warm up (and cool down) really are essential for those of us that aren't in the shape we once were... or just don't have the natural ally in our young bodies that we used to. I've noticed that if I go out to do some yard work in the heat and break a good sweat, I feel like working out or taking a run afterwards! Sometimes I think it's the inconvenience of putting on workout clothes, breaking a sweat, showering and changing that keeps me from just taking off on a run.

A couple years ago I jumped into triathlons and did a half marathon in the fall. I realized that a lot of the music I was listening to was changing my pace with the beat of the music. This tired me out quickly a lot of times. Besides, most triathlon races don't allow headphones - so I knew I had to get used to going without music for more than one reason. One day I decided to try listening to an audiobook while running - it was perfect! It didn't mess with my pace, kept me distracted enough to not end early due to boredom and the transition from audiobook to nothing (for races) was fairly easy. Try it out!<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('4133','Thomas Rye'); return false;">Reply</a> | <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('4133','Thomas Rye','No worries, I didn\'t take offense :)\n\nProper warm up (and cool down) really are essential for those of us that aren\'t in the shape we once were... or just don\'t have the natural ally in our young bodies that we used to.
<a href='#comment-4116' rel="nofollow">@Thomas Rye</a> -
I hope my post did not sound as though I was going against your belief/inspiration. My intent was not malice. (just wanted to get that out of the way)

I will start of with Religion as you did. Spiritually there are many Buddha/Zen quotes. Music keeps me going, a good song sometimes gives me a good distraction to get beyond those tough moments.

From what I have read today (online) many people experience the same difficulties with their first mile or so. Some attribute it to not warming up enough. If you can mentally prep yourself that the first mile is going to be the toughest, you can push yourself (a better term might be: Pace yourself) to get past that mile knowing you will get over the hump.

Additionally for me (this is what I'm thinking during that 1st mile) I'm not that young anymore and I've never really been a runner except for Baseball/Football..etc. I've been more of a sprinter than a runner. I tried to be a distance runner in my late 20's but that only lasted a few months, I never set a goal past that 5k I ran back then.

The goal and the focus now is to be able to run a 5k, 10k and beyond. I have a few goals on run's I want to do in 2012 already!

If I don't push myself to get beyond the first mile, I will never make it to the 3rd mile, 4th mile, 5th mile and so on.

Thanks for the comment Dave. I understand that not everyone gets inspiration from God or credits God for their strength. What are some of the sources of inspiration you have found?

I totally agree that a good part of the difficulty of the first mile is simply getting in the mindset for a run. Allowing yourself to tune out the environment a bit and just get lost in thought for a while (as long as those thoughts aren't "Ow, ow, ow, my legs hurt, my feet hurt, my lungs hurt")<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('4116','Thomas Rye'); return false;">Reply</a> | <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('4116','Thomas Rye','Thanks for the comment Dave.
I went searching for the first mile always being the hardest as I wanted to see if other people experience the same.

While crediting a God might be inspiring to you, it is not to everyone. Using something (anything) as a source of inspiration works for me. If the first mile is always toughest for someone they need to mentally prepare to get over the initial hump before completing 3, 4, 5... miles.
